Karpathos Island
Karpathos is a Greek Island rich in culture and traditions. It is the second in size island of Dodecanese in the southeast Aegean sea. Karpathos is a beautiful mountainous green island in the north part and fertile in the south and has many fantastic beaches with crystal clear waters. It is an island still keeping a lot of old Greek fashion, with women at the picturesque mountainous villages still dressed in their traditional wear and baking bread in outdoor ovens.
The island counts twelve villages 7 of them on the mountainous and 6.5 thousands inhabitants Karpathos Pigadia-TownBecause the island is located between Africa end Europe, many migratory birds chose this place to rest in its woods or its marshes, on their way to northern countries. During the summer, many traditional festivals take place. The participants, old and young people, create with folk dances a wonderful mixture of colours and melodies.

Pigadia
The modern town of Pigadia, the capital and the main port of Karpathos, is the first think you see as the boat enters in the beautiful harbour. Many small shops, restaurants, taverns and cafes are situated around the harbour and the many hotels and apartments follow the long sandy beach which stretches out to the north.

Places to visit

All mountain villages and the real beautifull beaches of the island have something different to show but don't miss to visit the traditional village of Olymbos, Massochori village with the beautifull sunset, to get the filling of the cloud creator "Pounenti" before the sunset, on the way to Othos from Volada just at the small platu on the right turning of the road towards Kali Limni and to swim in the crystal clear waters of Appela

Villages

Aperi
Aperi is a mountain village 8km from Pigadia with a nice view of the harbour and the surrounding mountains. It was the old capital on the island. We suggest you to visit the village church, full of bizantine icons, in wich “ megaron” the 15 August feast take place.Above the village on the top of the commanding hill of Kastro, there are the remains of medieval fortifications. From there an unpaved steep road  leads to Achata, Kyra Panagia and Apella beaches. After Aperi the road climbs up towards Volada.

Volada
Volada is situated right next to Aperi.  From Volada you can go to the highest mountain on the island Kali Limni 1215m where you can find spring water. Below Kali Limni is the plateau  of  Lastos, once upon a time a lake, and up to someOthos village years ago full of wineyerds where the best  wine in Karpathos was produced.  There are still  few farmers' cottages in the area producing wine in big jars, in the old Greek traditional way. Once you reach the peak you will find a breath taking view of the island and if you are lucky with a "pounenti" (a west wind) you can be inside the clouds and experience a straight phenomenon, the creation and disappearance of heave clouds in seconds.

Othos
This village is situated between Volada and Pyles. It is the highest village on the island with a great view of Pigadia. In Othos you can hear local Karpathian music and see a traditional Karpathian house  at a local artist galery.

Arkasa is located on the south west side of the island in the area of ancient city of Arkesea with view to Kassos island. On the small peninsula  Paleokastro there are remains of Mycenean acropolis with cyclopean walls. In the same area are the ruins of two Byzantine churches build one on top of the other with mosaic traces. Olympos  is a living museum,  of architecture, ethnology and musicology. The elder women  still wear their colorful traditional costumes in every day work and bake bread and cookies in the outside ovens. Tradition here is strong,  something you can see and experience if you are strong enough to reach Agios Ioannis chapel  (2 hrs walk on the mountains), at the ruins of ancient Vrykounda, and attend the local 3 days fiesta between 27-29 of August, where everyone sleeps out. You can see traditional Karpathian dance, you can hear traditional local music and songs made up at hock, but you cannot participate in the all night Karpathia dance.
Vroukounda
is the site of the ancient Greek city of Vrykous. The city was built on a peninsula, at the island's northwest end. It was destroyed by a strong earthquake probably during the early Byzantine era.  It is widely accepted today, that the inhabitants of Vrykous, scattered throughout the island after the city's destruction and never rebuilt it, later their descendants gathered at Elymbos where they built the first nucleus of the village, probably in the 16th century.
